Heart of Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue (c)2002 |
Mission Statement & Rescue Policy This is the personal policy of Heart of Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue, and in no way shape or form mirrors the attitudes, beliefs, values or policies of the GPCA, or any other regional clubs or rescues organizations. It is the goal of HOT-GPR to rescue and re-home those Great Pyrenees who are unwanted, abused and neglected, turned into shelters, or abandoned and are of sound temperament. If a Pyr is found to be non-placable, the animal either remains to live out its life with a HOT-GPR member, or is euthanized with the same dignity, kindness, and respect afforded a cherished family pet. Whichever the particular situation dictates. We are dedicated to maintaining the safety and well being of our fosters and their pets, as well as our rescues. However, it has been proven to be more effective that for the livestock guardian dog that has been rescued from a rural setting, every effort should be made to return that same dog back into the situation he/she knows best. Those from pet homes, or those lgd's showing that they are more suited to the pet home will be placed in the pet home they are best suited for. Quite simply put - the best home/foster/situation will be found for each individual rescue however long it takes. HOT-GPR accepts animals from shelters, humane societies, individuals and those dogs left to wander the streets. Our first priority, however are dogs in shelters in immediate danger of being euthanized. If one of our rescue dogs breeder becomes known, HOT-GPR will make an effort to contact them first, and give them every opportunity to help place and/or place the dog themselves. Each dog that comes into rescue at Heart of Texas GPR is fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered, temperament tested, and taught basic house manners. Each dog is heartworm checked, and if necessary treated for heartworms, and then put on prevention. Each Pyr is placed on a proper diet, and exercised regularly, groomed, and free of parasites such as lice/fleas/ ticks. Individuals wishing to adopt a rescue Great Pyrenees through HOT-GPR must fill out an adoption application for screening, and have an initial interview & home check prior to being selected as a potential home. Dogs are placed on a first come first serve basis if all other matching criteria are equal. However, a dog is not "Just Placed" so we can have a placement. A succesful placement means a lot of hard work and dedication. We want the placement to be forever both for the new owners AND the dog. HOT-GPR charges an adoption fee of no less than $125.00 for the adoption of each Great Pyrenees. However, adoption fees may be slightly higher depending on the extent of medical treatment required for the adoptive animal. Following the initial placement the Adoptive family is contacted either by phone or in person after 3 days by the foster parent, or other acting rescue agent to ensure that everything is going well. Another visit or call is made after 2 weeks, and then monthly until the dog is found to have adjusted nicely. After that the family is encouraged to keep in touch with rescue at least once a year, and to call if ever they have problems and/or questions. HOT-GPR is committed to the life, health and well being of every animal it places. If at anytime during the life of an adopted Great Pyrenees, the family can no longer care for the animal, the animal comes back to HOT-GPR to be re-homed. A special thanks to a wee Scotty named "Norche" of STRNA for her assistance! |
