Landscaping a west facing bed or yard that has morning shade is really not a problem as there are a great number of wonderful plants that will thrive in that situation. altho the books may say full sun many plants will adapt with no problem. for low growing plants try trailing winecups, pink skullcap, blackfoot daisy, moss verbena, four nerve daisy just to name a few. For something a little taller you might try zexmaneia, many of the salvias, skeleton leaf goldeneye, lantana, red yucca, nolinas, there are a lot of grasses that will add great texture to your landscape year round. for a bit taller still look at things like agraito, cenizos, sotol, yellow bells, fragrant mimoas (the native mimoas not the junk tree)flame acanthus, black delea. now we could go on for sometime but that should get you stated. the other thing that I would think about is maybe adding a little compost and lava sand to your beds mixed with your native soil (don't bring in dirt!). if you should have any questions fellfree to call(254-780-4233) or come by anytime. write and let me know how it works out.
