Altho it may look like nothing grows under the cedar trees there are many plants that will. In a thicket of cedar The lighting is one of the big problems but I have had many types of plants growing under my cedar trees like cedar sage, coralberry, whitebush honeysuckle, rockrose, tropacal sage, and cedar sadge just to name a few. As for as things you might add to your soil besides compost, lava sand I am a big fan of compost/lava sand mix (about 4pts compost to about 1pt lava sand) there are many things you can add but this is the bottom line if you can add nothing eles try these and I think you will be happy.
